Introduction

Pocket doors have been used in residential construction since the 1850s. For small spaces, the pocket door is ideal for space efficiency. For larger homes, open pocket doors disappear into the wall, allowing for a seamless flow from room to room. Pocket doors fell out of fashion in the 20th century because of poor-quality tracks and hardware that caused the doors to be noisy or broken easily. Fortunately, with today's technological advances in sliding door hardware, pocket door headaches are a thing of the past.

Case in point, the team at Killowen Construction built a beautiful 7,990 sq ft home in Park City, Utah, utilizing pocket doors. To contribute to the airiness of the spacious home, the 8’ pocket doors, paired with soft close hardware, vanish when opened, allowing for an unimpeded view of the rolling hills surrounding the residence.

Pocket doors in upscale environments

"The space-saving advantages of a pocket door will always make it a popular choice, and the handsome design options lend themselves to any environment," said Carrie Leskowitz, founder of Carrie Leskowitz Interior, in an interview on the return of pocket doors. And she’s right; interior designers and homeowners alike appreciate the benefit of these “disappearing doors” for saving space as well as being a stylish way to add privacy and elegance to a room. These features are showcased in this build.

In addition to creating unrestricted views of the landscape, the tall pocket doors complement the vertical walnut planks displayed throughout the home. The geometric lines created help maintain each room's overall balance and proportion. The sharp angular lines of each pocket door also contribute to this elegant and structural pattern.

Winner of the People’s Choice Award in the 2022 Park City Area Showcase of Homes

This breathtaking home won the People’s Choice award in the 2022 Park City Area Showcase of Homes. This yearly event is where industry leaders in construction and design display their tremendous skills and effectively inspire future build trends. The award was presented to the team at Killowen Construction, and Kimberly Parker, of Kimberly Parker Design, who designed the gorgeous interior.

High-quality pocket doors begin with high-quality hardware. The smooth sliding pocket doors showcased in 7509 Bugle Trail significantly differ from the pocket doors of the past. That’s because they are engineered with longevity in mind. The pocket doors used on the project were created using the CS Cavity Slider Pocket Frame.

The CS Cavity Slider Pocket Frame is supplied in an easy-to-assemble kitset, ensuring uniformity when installing multiple pockets in a project. Additionally, the frame is made of aluminum and is structurally robust, which guarantees that the pocket will not bow or bend as the home ages. The carriages that the doors roll on are made with encased ball bearings with large-diameter wheels that ensure that the carriage cannot jump off the track and cause the pocket door to jam.

Soft close pocket doors

You will notice that the pocket doors included in this build also feature a soft close function when the doors slide shut. This was achieved using the CS SofStop. The CS SofStop is a patented mechanism activated when the door is opened. When the door is pulled close, the mechanism is triggered, stopping the door from slamming against the jamb and, instead, softly bringing it to a close.
